Invisalign® has quickly become one of the most preferred ways to undergo orthodontic treatment, especially for teenagers and adults. Invisalign® offers benefits that cannot be achieved with other treatment methods, which is why general dentists are recommending it as a preferred method. Continue reading to find out more.
Invisalign® for teenagers and adults
Below is a quick overview of Invisalign® and why general dentists recommend it for certain aged individuals. This information may be especially helpful to those considering alternative orthodontic treatments to braces.
The treatment process
The Invisalign® treatment process is unlike any other orthodontic process. However, a general dentist does start things out the same by evaluating the teeth to determine what the end goal is. Some individuals require correction for crookedness or crowding, both of which can be treated with Invisalign®. However, more complex circumstances like bite correction may require the help of traditional methods.
After the evaluation, if Invisalign® is determined to be a viable option, the general dentist will take a variety of scans of the oral cavity. These scans will be used by the dental lab to create the custom-fit Invisalign® pieces. The lab will create the entire series of aligners at the start based on the scans. Each aligner will be slightly different in order to match the progress that the teeth make.
Every few weeks, the patient will visit the general dentist for a check-up of the teeth and to switch out aligners. It is advised that the patient wear the aligner for 22 hours a day and only remove it for eating and oral hygiene.
The benefit to teenagers and adults
Teenagers and adults are often hesitant to undergo orthodontic treatment because traditionally, braces were the only option. However, with Invisalign®, treatment can be practically discreet! Because the aligners are clear and removable, the treatment process is a lot easier to conceal. Additionally, the ability to remove Invisalign® allows for flexibility with treatment. Things like picture days or social events can be easier to attend without having to worry that metal wires and brackets will be covering the teeth. General dentists recommend Invisalign® to teenagers and adults for this reason, in addition to the fact that it is a better option for those who have a more developed oral cavity.
What else to know
While Invisalign® is a great orthodontic treatment option, it is crucial to understand that the treatment process must abide by discipline. Because the aligners are removable, it can be tempting to take them out and then forget to put them back in. However, the entire process can be delayed if they are not worn for 22 hours a day. This can also cause problems with the fit of the next aligner in the series.
